How to lay a patio
Add some extra living space to your home and increase the value of your property
Creating a patio is an excellent way to add some extra living space to your home and increase the value of your property. It may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools, materials, and a bit of know-how, it can be a fun and rewarding project to take on. Here are seven steps to help guide you through the process of laying a patio.
1. Choose your location and measure the area
First, decide where you want your patio to be and measure the area you want to cover. Make sure to mark the boundaries clearly using stakes or spray paint.
2. Prepare the ground
Clear any grass, weeds, or debris from the area and dig down to a depth of at least 150mm, removing any large rocks or stones as you go. Level the ground and create a slight slope away from your house to ensure proper drainage.
3. Add a sub-base
Lay down a sub-base of crushed stone or gravel and compact it with a plate compactor until it is level and firm. This will provide a stable foundation for your patio.

Start laying your paving slabs from one corner of the patio and work your way out, making sure to keep a consistent gap of about 10-15mm between each slab. Use a spirit level to ensure that each slab is level and tap them down gently with a rubber mallet to set them in place.
5. Cut slabs to size
If you need to cut slabs to fit around the edges of your patio or around any obstacles, use a diamond-tipped saw or angle grinder to make precise cuts.
6. Fill in the gaps
Once all your slabs are in place, fill in the gaps between them with fine sand or stone dust, sweeping it across the surface and into the joints. This will help to lock the slabs in place and prevent weeds from growing.
7. Enjoy your new patio
Finally, give your new patio a good sweep and a wash with a hose to remove any dust or debris. Now it's time to add some furniture and enjoy your new outdoor space!
With these simple steps, laying a patio can be an enjoyable project that will test your DIY skills, enhance your home and add value to your property.
